The nature park Lüneberger Heide –
The first one of 103 and something very special!

Nature parks are expansive areas of protected landscape and as such fall under the Federal Environment Protection Law. They consist mainly of protected landscape and nature reserves and because of their specific charming landscape qualities are specially suited for relaxation. The aim of the nature park is to maintain a balance between an intact nature, a healthy economy and a high standard of living. They are a model for the development of rural areas.

In Germany there are 103 specially valuable culture landscapes, that are protected as nature parks. They all maintain and develop something unique and strive to sensitize and arouse enthusiasm for this. The nature park Lüneburger Heide was the first nature park in Germany and is one of the biggest and best known of its kind today. It spreads out over 107,000 hectares and encompasses one of the largest coherent areas of heath in central Europe. These lie in the nature reserve Lüneburger Heide around the Wilseder Mountain, the heart of the nature park. Moors, old forests, streams, rivers and populated villages with old farmhouses and thatched houses are part of  this unique cultural landscape that are worth protecting and experiencing .

The culture landscape of the nature park Lüneburger Heide has evolved over hundreds of years through the influence of mankind and presently offers a habitat for a variety of rare plants and animals.
