Nature reserve Lüneburger Heide-
The heart of the nature park-
here many things are different and that for good reasons!

Surely the visitor to the nature reserve Lüneburger Heide will have noticed that here:

  • erratic boulders and decent direction signs point out the way
  • the paths are not tarred
  • coaches instead of cars bring the visitors to Wilsede
  • dogs are on the leash
  • rangers on horseback keep watch

This may annoy one or the other visitor who would like to get to Wilsede fast, or who has to push his bicycle. All these have good reasons however: It preserves the unique picture of the historical heath landscape, protects rare animals and plants endangered by extinction, ensures the water reserves, preserves typical structural landscape elements and maintains the relaxation function of the region for the people.

In the nature reserve Lüneburger Heide they still exist: places where the tranquillity is not disturbed by the noise of automobiles or other sounds of civilisation. Rare plants and animals have found a home here. Enjoy this peace and quietness and the expansive house free landscape, and help to keep and protect it.

The nature reserve Lüneburger Heide is the oldest nature reserve in Germany. On a European level it is listed as a „Special Protection Area“ under the Bird Protection Guidelines, and as a „Special Area of Conservation“ under the Flora-Fauna-Habitat-Guidelines (FFH- Areas), and as such is a part of the European Protected Area Systems NATURA 2000. It is the largest FFH area in lower Saxony.
