About the special flair of the heath
As well as being an impressive natural environ ment, the Nature Park Lüneburger Heide also offers an interesting cultural area. Churches, Mills and farmhouses from the middle ages are typical for the likeable quaint and healthy towns and villages. Archaeological diggings and museums bear witness to the thousand year history of the region, and tells of the life of the „Heidjer“. The local culinary traditions and the recipes that have been handed down from generation to generation are, like „Platt Deutsch“, an important ingredient in the cultural area of the Lüneburger Heide.
Legends and fairy tales tell of giants, witches, robber knights and enamoured trolls. Authors and painters such as Herman Löns, Christian Morgenstern and August Freudenthal, as well as local films have contributed to the image of the Lüneburger Heide, and have made it well known. Many authors and artists have been and still are inspired from the dusky, foggy atmosphere of the Heid.
