The character of a 5000 year old cultivated landscape

Most people, when they think of Lüneburger Heide, will primarily have heather with its violet blossoms, junipers, shepherds and German heath (sheep) before their minds eye. However, this 5000 year old cultivated landscape is formed by much more than that. Woods, moors, fields and meadows, heathland, brooks, rivers and ponds, rare animals and plants belong here just as thatched houses with oak trees, farmyards, festivals, customs and the mentality of the „heidjers“ (locals) do.
