Here you will encounter the Heidschnucken
It's impossible to envisage the Heath without the Heidschnucken or the shepherds, and certainly you expect to encounter them at least once on your visit to our region. You don't have to leave this encounter to providence in the Lüneburger Heide Nature Park. The chances of meeting a grazing herd being watched over by an attentive sheepdog and the shepherd are multiple and are very special experiences.
Our Tip:spend the whole day with the shepherd, and watch him at work, or better still help him with the work.
Schnucken around Amelinhausen
In the summertime there is a shepherd with his herd in the vicinity of Amelinghausen. Ask at the Naturpark-Informationsstelle Amelinghausen (Nature Park-Information) where the herd is to be found. If you want to help the shepherd taking care of the herd or want to accompany him while he's doing so, you can book „A Day with the Shepherd“. The Naturpark-Informationsstelle Amelinghausen will devise a schedule for you for an unforgettable day.
Schnucken around Neuenkirchen
In Neuenkirchen you will find the largest herd of Schnucken in the Lüneburger Heide. You can observe the bringing in of the herd to the pens daily except for Sundays and Mondays, at 17.30h ,at the sheep farm in Neuenkirchen. The sheep farm is old and well maintained and is worth a visit in itself. Ask at the Naturpark-Informationsstelle Neuenkirchen for all inclusive offers and guided tours pertaining to the Heidschnucken. They will inform you gladly.
Schnucken around Schneverdingen
In the landscape protected area of „Schneverdingen Höpen“a herd of Schnucken take occupancy of the so called „lower sheep pen“ at the beginning o f April. You can witness the herd leaving the pens daily at 11.00h until October. The herd returns between 17.30h. and 19.00h.
The Naturpark-Informatinosstelle Schneverdingen also offers you a „Day with the Shepherd“,or a package deal with the shepherd and the sheep. They can gladly give you more detailed information concerning their offers.
Schnucken in the Nature Park Lüneburger Heide
From spring 2009 onwards Heidschnucken are a permanent feature in Wilsede. Shepherds and their Schnucken can be visited in the Nature park with advance notice.
